I had suffered from Insomnia for years. It was caused by stresses, like most people. You know those nights very well don’t you? I felt like the night will go on forever. I took a sleeping pill but I still didn’t get any sleep and the next day I felt rubbish with that hung over feeling and went to work which caused even more stress.

So I decided to do some research and found that if you do not get at least 7 hours of sleep every single night, your body and particularly your brain will not repair itself. I found out there is a very important chemical that naturally occurs in the body and controls our internal clock call Melatonin. Melatonin will be reduced if we do not sleep enough, because it is produced when we are asleep during the night when it is dark. Huge amount of light that we are exposed to in our daily activity from computers, office lights etc will also causes the reduction in melatonin. The research shows that stress can definitely reduce melatonin.

Below are my short reviews of sleeping pills specifically the natural sleep aids on the market:

  • Melatonin – Not only our body produce melatonin, but plants and certain food like rice also produced it.
  • 5-HTP - There is a tree found in West African called Griffonia tree. The seeds can naturally be extracted. This will help you increase your melatonin levels.
  • Valerian Root - This root is taken from the valerian plants and has been used by many of our ancestors for centuries. GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) is an amino acid that naturally occurs in the nervous system in our body. Basically, it helps the brain to relax by preventing certain neurons going into overdrive.
  • The Passion Flower - I found out that I have them in my yard. It is purple and white flowers during the summer. It is very popular plant and has been grown in many private gardens.

And here are my tips from my experience to get a better sleep:

  • Go to bed at the same time every single night because our body needs a routine. You will begin to feel sleepy at the same time every night if you do this.
  • DO NOT have alcohol or even caffeine up to 2 hours before sleeping, because caffeine stimulates the brain to stay awake. Caffeine contained in all carbonated drinks and soda and many people don’t realise it.
  • Read a book.
  • Try to clear your mind af all thoughts.
